A list for 2018

Counting down to 2018 from the beach in Hua Hin, Thailand.

I know, I know: January has come and gone and, yes, I'm late to the resolutions game.

Like most, at the end of the year, I usually make a list of things I want to focus on in the coming new year. It's a chance for myself to reflect on the things I had hoped to accomplish or work on in the past year, evaluate how I did, and think about what's next. It's also a moment when I get to rediscover what the one-year-ago version of myself had hoped for and smile about the things I have achieved or forgotten about.

My lists are usually scrappy, vague, and long, so I tried to tone it down a little this year.

Take control of my health.

We only get one body, after all. I don't want to be a certain weight, but rather I want to feel healthy. Working for myself last year, I sacrificed time and effort that I should have put into taking care of myself physically and mentally. I want to do better this year, starting with exercising, never skipping meals, and staying on top of my health checkups.

Exercise at least 3 times a week.

And on that note, this has been going surprisingly well since the end of last year! I've also been enjoying adding variety in my routine with Classpass.

Fall back in love with writing.

I used to love to write. Until I realized my English will never be as good as those who grew up with English as their native language and became incredibly conscience. I want to overcome part of that this year and simply enjoy writing again.

Read a new book every month.

At least, that is. This has always been on my list as "read more" every year and, although I've successfully read "more" each year, I don't think I read consistently enough. It comes and goes. This year I want to be more consistent, starting with a small step like one new book each month. I haven't read a whole lot growing up: learning English and Thai together meant there were many gaps in my literature on both sides. If you have any recommendations, no matter what genre, let me know!

Get to know more of the bay.

This is my new home for the next couple of years and I want to get to know it even better this year!

Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Try putting myself more out there. Take risks.

Make new recipes monthly.

I really enjoy cooking (and eating, of course) and I've gotten to the point where I have my own repertoire of dishes I'm comfortable cooking. I want to expand that further, specifically learning more Thai and European dishes.

Create more. Consume less.

I used to be fixated about specializing in one creative outlet, but I've come to realize I enjoy all sorts of things and probably will never settle with one style/medium. And that's okay. The point is to do more and spend less time worrying about the output or consuming the internet.

Practice and learn more basic Korean.

I've had to learn and relearn Hangul so many times because I've never practiced or kept it up.

Pack lunch consistently.

This has been on and off. I want to be more consistent.

Get a driver's license.

I figured this one's long overdue.

Dedicate more time to this blog.

It's been about a year and every time I've looked back at this space I've created, I feel so satisfied. If there's anything specific you'd like to see here, I'm all ears!

2017 was incredibly career-focused for me: wrapped up my last few freelance projects, several interviews, signed a new job, moved across the country. For 2018, I want to pick up the parts of my life I put aside last year. It's been a month in and I'd say 2018 has been off to a promising start! What are your goals for 2018?

As always, thanks for sticking with me :)
